Who Are We? |
Eduardo Amarillo Born in Buenos Aires in 1967, Eduardo grew up in a family deeply rooted in the Tango. His aunts and uncles were steeped in the atmosphere of the milonga, and learned to dance alongside the famous dancers of their age. His mother, a keen amateur dancer and singer, introduced him at an early age to the music and the poetry of the Tango. At six years old, his grandparents taught to him to dance Tango. They took him to milongas and showed him the complex codes of behaviour - most importantly, respect for the music and for the woman. In the Seventies, with the change of the political and economic situation in Argentina (the Dirty War), the lives of Argentines changed. Like many, Eduardo stopped dancing and concentrated on his studies. Much later, when his mother died, Eduardo remembered the very happy moments of his childhood and yearned to have the Tango back in his life. He discovered that the Tango too had changed a lot in the previous 20 years. Young people were mixing the traditional Tango with elements of other dance styles - classical, jazz and contemporary - into something new, called Nuevo Tango. So he began to learn that style, including choreography and show dancing. That was all very well but he missed the soul and the feeling of the original Milonguero style . It is Eduardo's belief that anyone can dance and enjoy the Tango, whatever their physical disposition or age. The only requirement is a desire to learn something new. Dancing the Argentine Tango is great exercise, it helps the body stay agile and, what's more, it gives the mind and soul a sensation of well-being and satisfaction. |
Rachel Sloan Originally from London, England, Rachel was so taken with Buenos Aires when she visited for a holiday in 2005, that she came back here to live. It was the Tango that first attracted her to Argentina and the affair continues. She believes firmly in the therapeutic benefits of dance. Apart from being great fun and excellent exercise, it is mentally stimulating, personally challenging and has a broad and fascinating social side. Rachel met Eduardo in the milonga and they danced together in the Metropolitan and World Tango Championships in 2007. Having seen the milonga experiences of several visiting friends - sitting at the side despite being excellent dancers - Rachel is convinced that an agency for tango partners will make it easier for visitors to enjoy dancing tango in Buenos Aires. With a first degree in philosophy & psychology and a masters degree in business administration (MBA), plus many years working with different companies in the UK, Rachel brings a wealth of experience to TangoTaxiDancers. Apart from designing this website, she has been setting up administrative systems to help the company work well and grow easily. |
YuYu Herrera Patricia Herrera, better known as Yuyú, has been for more than 15 years, an unmissable part of the landscape in the milongas of Buenos Aires. For those frequent visitors who have taken thousands of classes without making any progress, she has been a 'fairy godmother' who, with her extensive knowledge and perfect teaching style, has been able to help them really dance the Tango. Yuyú began dancing when she was very small and carried on with different disciplines, like ballet, salsa, rock, flamenco, etc. She graduated university with a degree in Sociology. The result is a Tango teacher who is highly qualified with a broad knowledge and a real love of teaching. Her excellent understanding of the mechanics of movement, the muscular and skeletal systems, together with her natural creativity help her to give very personal help to people who want to improve their dance as well as giving a very quick start to beginners. Eduardo Amarillo says that his life as a professional Tango dancer, can be clearly divided into the time before and the time after Yuyú. At TangoTaxiDancers we consider ourselves lucky to have her on the staff. |
